La sua fotografia è dinamica, spesso a “volo di uccello”. Daria Troitskaia è una fotografa multitasking che sceglie cosa immortalare, di petto. Il suo portfolio è variegato: ci si può imbattere in corpi nudi (senza mai scivolare nel volgare) e su vette innevate; e sognare dinanzi alla fisicità sinuosa dei ballerini. Che sia una Leica o un altro strumento, per Daria la vera poesia è raccontare senza “filtri” la realtà.

Milano come punto di svolta per la sua carriera: come ci è arrivata nella capitale dell’economia e della moda italiana? 

Milan as a turning point for your career: how did you get there in the capital of the Italian economy and fashion?

Anche durante la mia infanzia, ho vissuto in Europa e mi sentivo sempre come una cittadina metropolitana. Un po’ di tempo fa, mi spostai a Malta. La mia famiglia e io spendemmo molto tempo deliberando sul miglior posto per trasferirsi in Europa, considerando la convenienza per il viaggio, il clima e la cucina. La scelta fu piuttosto chiara, l’Italia e quindi la città più moderna e adatta agli espatriati, che è Milano. Per me, la città è anche ideale per la messa in rete e a comunità artistica. Ci sono sempre esibizioni interessanti in corso, e puoi incontrare molte persone affascinanti.

Even in my childhood, I lived in Europe and always felt like a metropolitan citizen. Some time ago, I moved to Malta. My family and I spent considerable time deliberating on the best place to relocate within Europe, considering convenience for travel, climate, and cuisine. The choice was quite clear—Italy, and if Italy, then the most modern and expat-friendly city, which is Milan. For me, this city is also ideal for networking and the art community. There are always interesting exhibitions happening, and you can meet a lot of fascinating people.

Define your artistic journey for us.

Ho studiato presso una scuola d’arte e successivamente ho proseguito con il design in università. Per molto tempo ho lavorato come una progettista del web e come direttrice d’arte. Quindi, potrei dire che l’arte è sempre stata parte della mia vita. Nello specifico, la fotografia, non solamente come parte di una generica educazione artistica ma come campo dedicato, mi ha intrigato mentre mi spostavo a Malta. Divenni appassionata riguardo la fotografia di strada e cominciai ad approfondire questo campo, leggendo ampiamente e frequentando lezioni. Continuo a impegnarmi in ciò, poiché la fotografia offre opportunità senza limiti per il miglioramento e le materie. Mentre è accessibile a tutti, ottenere il successo richiede una vera immersione. Letteratura, musei, cinema e la vita di tutti I giorni servono come mie fonti di ispirazione.

I studied at an art school and later pursued design at university. For a long time, I worked as a web designer and art director. So, I could say that art has always been a part of my life. Specifically, photography, not just as a part of general artistic education but as a dedicated field, intrigued me when I moved to Malta. I became passionate about street photography and started delving deeper into the field, reading extensively and attending lectures. I continue to engage with it, as photography offers endless opportunities for improvement and subjects. While it is accessible to everyone, achieving success requires true immersion. Literature, museums, cinema, and everyday life serve as my sources of inspiration.

Lei è inseparabile dalla sua Leica: quando ha iniziato a scattare con questa macchina fotografica?

You are inseparable from your Leica: when did you start shooting with this camera?

Onestamente, non uso esclusivamente Leica; ho anche fotocamere di medio formato, entrambe a pellicola e digitale. Tuttavia, fu Leica ad accompagnarmi quando ero seriamente interessata nella fotografia. Il grande vantaggio di queste fotocamere è che producono immagini eccellenti senza il bisogno di pre-impostarle. Infatti, credo che usando le pre-impostazioni con Leica sia un crimine. Le fotocamere Leica sono versatili e adatte perfettamente ai miei bisogni. Inoltre, Leica è una delle machine fotografiche più belle e robuste, il che è importante considerando i viaggi che intraprendo e le sfide a cui resistono.

Honestly, I don’t exclusively use a Leica; I also have other medium format cameras, both film and digital. However, it was the Leica that accompanied me when I became seriously interested in photography. The great advantage of these cameras is that they produce excellent images without the need for presets. In fact, I believe using presets with a Leica is a crime. Leica cameras are versatile and perfectly suited to my needs. Additionally, Leica is one of the most beautiful and robust cameras, which is important considering the trips I take and the challenges they endure.

Tra i suoi ultimi lavori, gli scatti all’l’Accademia Di Stato di San Pietroburgo il balletto di Leonid Jacobson al Teatro Alezandrinsky.

Among his latest works, shots at the The St. Petersburg State Academic Leonid Jacobson Ballet Theatre at the Alexandrinsky Theater. Tell us about the experience.

Questa opportunità è sorta tramite una coincidenza fortunata. Ho avuto un’amica stretta a San Pietroburgo che era rinomata come ballerina. Lei chiese se fossi interessata nel fotografare un balletto, e poiché amo il balletto, accettai. Fui invitata nel primo retroscena per il Lago del Cigno, poi Don Quixote, e successivamente ad alter produzioni. Ho anche avuto l’opportunità di viaggiare e fotografare le loro prestazioni in Serbia e Armenia. Rimasi colpita da come sia intenso e impegnativo il balletto come forma d’arte. Ho testimoniato alcuni ballerini che si rompevano le loro gambe, con alcuni che esibivano la loro mostra finale, che stavano tutti ancora sul palco e sorridevano per il pubblico. Nel dietro le quinte, ho visto ballerini debuttare, le loro emozioni prima e dopo l’esibizione, il che era incredibilmente affascinante. Ora ho una prospettiva unica sul balletto, dai lati oppure da sopra, come visto nella mia foto nel Lago del Cigno.

This opportunity arose through a fortunate coincidence. I have a close friend in St. Petersburg who was once a renowned ballerina. She asked if I would be interested in photographing ballet, and as I love ballet, I agreed. I was invited backstage first for Swan Lake, then Don Quixote, and subsequently other productions. I’ve also had the chance to travel and photograph their performances in Serbia and Armenia. I was struck by how demanding and intense ballet is as an art form. I witnessed several dancers break their legs, with some performing their final shows, yet they all stayed on stage and smiled for the audience. Backstage, I see dancers debuting, their emotions before and after performances, which is incredibly fascinating. I now have a unique perspective on ballet, from the sides or even above, as seen in my photos of Swan Lake.

Attiva in tutto il mondo, le sue fotografie raccontano le diverse bellezze di questo pianeta: non solo paesaggi mozzafiato ma anche regate e treni di lusso in giro per l’Africa. C’è un lavoro al quale è particolarmente legata che sia per un’emozione particolare oppure per la fatica in sé?

Active all over the world, her photographs tell the different beauties of this planet: not only breathtaking landscapes but also regattas and luxury trains around Africa. Is there a job to which you are particularly attached, whether it is for a particular emotion or for the effort itself?

Fotografo solo ciò che mi interessa. Se ricevo richieste per compiti non interessanti, semplicemente non le considero. Per me, la creatività è fondamentale nella fotografia. Non posso fotografare ciò che non mi interessa; necessito ispirazione. Il mio viaggio in treno in Africa mi lasciò un’impressione durevole, e spero che non sarà il mio ultimo viaggio del genere. Fortunatamente, ci sono innumerevoli posti incredibili, quindi la sfida è cercare tempo per tutto.

I only photograph what interests me. If I receive requests for uninteresting tasks, I simply don’t take them. For me, creativity is paramount in photography. I can’t photograph what doesn’t interest me; I need inspiration. My trip on a train in Africa certainly left a lasting impression, and I hope it won’t be my last such journey. Fortunately, there are countless amazing places, so the challenge is finding time for everything.

C’è qualcuno o qualcosa che vorresti fortemente immortalare?

Is there someone or something you would really like to immortalise?

La mia serie di ballo. Queste foto mostrano eventi che sono già accaduti ma rappresentano anche qualcosa in corso. Lo stesso ballo può essere esibito giorno dopo giorno sul palco, ma nel dietro le quinte, è diverso ogni volta. Voglio catturare e condividere questo con gli altri. Vorrei condividere con il pubblico cosa vedo e mostrare che da un lato dietro il palco ci sono persone normali con emozioni, e sul palco ci sono creature straordinarie.

My ballet series. These photos show events that have already happened but also depict something ongoing. The same ballet can be performed day after day on stage, but backstage, it’s different every time. I want to capture and share this with others. I’d like to share with audience what I see and show that on the one hand behind the stage it’s normal people with emotions, and on the stage it’s super creatures.

Molti premi, diverse mostre, due libri fotografici: in quali progetti è, al momento, impegnata?

Many awards, several exhibitions, two photography books: what projects are you currently involved in?

Ancora, è la mia serie di ballo, che richiede molto tempo e sforzi. Spero che diventerà un qualcosa di significativo che rimane nella storia. Mi piace anche condividere la mia prospettiva su viaggi unici intorno al mondo. E’ gratificante condividere quello che vedo con gli altri. Sono fortunata di avere seguaci che apprezzano il mio lavoro, chiedono un consiglio, e condividono le proprie creazioni.

Again, it’s my ballet series, which requires a lot of time and effort. I hope it will become something significant that remains in history. I also enjoy sharing my perspective on unique journeys around the world. It’s gratifying to share what I see with others. I am fortunate to have followers who appreciate my work, seek advice, and share their own creations.
